Welcome

I’m Nora, a copy editor, page designer and journalist. I currently live in Pennsylvania, working for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette copy desk. I also work as a freelance editor, designer and copywriter. Head over to the “contact me” tab if you’re interested in what I can do for your writing, your brand and your audience!

I’m passionate about engaging audiences in print, online and in-person. There’s no place journalism should not strive to meet the communities it serves.

I graduated from summa cum laude with a B.S. in Communication, Journalism from Appalachian State University in December 2019. During my time in college, I fostered a great love for all things storytelling. By splitting my time between courses in journalism and communication studies, I can assess hard news values as well as what is communicated in how a story is told. How the audience will walk away from a story is just as important as how a journalist goes about reporting it.

I’ve worked as a leader and a team player in newsrooms. I moved from designer to graphics editor to editor-in-chief at my university’s student newspaper, The Appalachian. I was selected as a Dow Jones News Fund multiplatform editing intern and worked on the copy desk at the Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette-Mail after 10 days of training in copy editing, page design and online production. My campus leadership for student publications, studies in the Honors College and related thesis earned me the honor of serving as commencement speaker for App State’s 2019 winter graduation ceremony.

My work won First Place for page design from the North Carolina College Media convention two years in a row. I’ve also taken home awards for multimedia storytelling and opinion writing from NCCMA. I won the Apple Award for copy editing from the College Media Association. Most recently, a story I wrote was nominated for a Pinnacle award from CMA. Plus, during my time as editor-in-chief, The Appalachian took home best in show for print and online news from NCCMA, as well as several individual awards from CMA and ACP.

My favorite food? Soup. All kinds.

My favorite animal? Pitbulls. Especially my dogs, Ruby and Opal.

My favorite punctuation mark? The Em dash — of course.
